I feel inclined to comment because this is such a fundamental issue. If you follow the instruction ‘to the letter’ this issue will probably not arise since the arm’s will come back roughly the same way they went up – by up I mean up the plane (sorry Ross) and they will come back down the plane. One issue that complicates this is that in most cases the arms ‘lift’ with respect to the body AND the plane. This means they have to descend in two way’s on the way down – one down the plane and one back to the body. It is the latter which is prone to cause problem’s as it can easily lead to a disconnection and the body can ‘leave the arm’s behind’.
I know Ross is not a fan of raising the arm’s and I do not do it significantly (old habit’s) but I have found a way round it is assist gravity a bit and apply a little force to bring the arm’s back to the body at the same time as the body bring’s them down the plane. This has helped me a lot because it can lead to other problem’s in addition to leaving the arm’s behind. In my case, I was very susceptible to shanking the ball as a result of coming from the outside (sorry again Ross). I can now be pretty confident of returning to the sweet spot on most occasion’s.
Work on mastering the Ross Move and you will play some great and enjoyable golf. Cheer’s Dave

Ok. What I meant by “line-up” was that when I watch your swing videos your arms (elbows) look perfectly in front of your hips before and at impact. I just can’t seem to get my arms to that position because my hips seem turned too much just before and right at impact. I feel like I’m closer to “clearing the hips” which is not what you intend. I think this robs me of power.

After watching some video of my swing, I notice that I am still not getting my arms back down in front with my body rotation. It seems that my hip turn always gets a little ahead of my arms and they never catch up. I hit the ball decently on occasion this way, but I know that it’s not correct. I’ve practiced the Ross Move drill, but I still can’t get it to work during even my easiest swings. I understand that the arms should be pulled down with the body rotation but the pull still leaves my arms behind.

I think that the issue may be that I was trying to not let my right (back) elbow bend. Even though I tried to squeeze my elbows together, when I tried to limit my back elbow bend I was actually becoming disconnected more and more as by backswing length increased. By squeezing and focusing on my back elbow pointing more towards the ground as I allow it to bend I believe I may be heading in the right direction. My shorter swings did not have this problem so much because my back elbow had not really reached that point. By restricting my elbow bend on longer backswings my template felt further from the front of my body and I could not get it back in front on the downswing. I was also focusing on getting the front elbow to “line-up” withe my front hip as I turned.

When I watch your full swing videos (a thousand times!), it now appears to me that your back elbow bend allows you to kind of “lay” your template back in front as your turn pulls it down and around. The challenge is that when I allow the left arm to bend it wants to bend outward so I have to on allow it to bend downward while squeezing it close to the front elbow. This feels like a small flexibility issue.

I could only try this in my backyard golf mat since we have been getting bombarded with rain for over a week in Baton Rouge. But I hope that the elbow bend is my smoking gun when I eventually go to the range.

Please let me know if I am off track in my thinking.

Sorry about the bad wording of my question, but you answered the intent of it. I believe it is a backswing issue where I’m getting disconnected.

I’m wondering about that too and the only thing you answered was about the setup with the video not widths of the stances with different clubs…???

One question I had for you regarding my setup for driver. I found that if I take a little more knee flex (still in a balanced, athletics position) I am able to make better and more consistent contact with the ball and brace my hips with my back foot/leg, plus it allows me to keep my chin up more naturally. Also, I pick a spot of grass about 4 inches behind ball and maybe one inch further from me and concentrate on that as I swing (in other words just beyond the club face at address). That really helps me keep my chin up, not slide back, and pull my club around as my body turns through. I don’t stay fixed on that spot past contact but let my body and shoulders turn my head to face the target. What do you think about these adjustments? The slightly deeper knee flex seems to help me with all my clubs. It keeps me from leaning forward, I guess.

Hey Ross. My driver is really becoming more consistent using your set up. I am hitting it straight and about 190-200 yards. I am getting the setup, shoulder turn and pulling my arms around with my body more consistent. Today I concentrated on turning my shoulders a little more quickly while really thinking about resisting turning my hip. All of a sudden I was smoking my drives another 30 yards or more and straight. I can’t wait to just keep adding speed to my rotation and seeing how far this 57 year old will be able to drive it. Your method works and I feel no strain on my body. Wish Tiger would learn your method.

Regarding a fade or a draw with any club – Should I expect added loft when opening the club face (and feet) for a fade? Likewise, should I expect a lower trajectory when I close the face (and feet) for a draw?

    Ross,

Would you adjust how far out in front of your front foot you would tee up the ball if you were trying to hit either a slight draw or fade with your driver? I was playing with this and since the club face is opened in a fade it seem to cause me to hit too high of a trajectory. Would I shorten my normal 4 inch distance from the club head to the ball then?

Hi Ross, I have a question regarding whether use of the Ross swing would negate the so called benefits of a driver with adjustable weights in the club head. I say this as I can envisage some benefits to fit the club using a ‘conventional’ 2 lever swing but as with the Ross swing we are trying to keep things constant this, changing weights should not (ideally) infuence the result. Am I correct or would there in fact be an advantage of a driver with adjustable weights? Thanks davew

I have been using the Ross move now for 2 months and I feel it is time to weigh in. I switched to this method mainly due to a chronic sore right hip and lower back. I would not be playing golf at this time if not for Ross’s method. I have been playing this game for 35 or so years, always battling the inconsistent contact with the ball. I have never hit the ball so straight and very few fats, and NO PAIN! It does leave me at times due to old habits, but this system works! Turn, Rotate, it is that simple! For me ,I have found that if I force the turn too far, the less consistent the contact. If I allow the arms to fold at all in the turn, it leads to bad contact. It feels strange, but the compression of the ball is so much better. Extend back, extend thru, and ROTATE COMPLETELY to the left. It gets you up on your right toe with all the weight on the left side and the right shoulder at the target. Thanks Ross!

Yeah Ross, I just got home from a round and read your responce. I agree and actually kinda figured it out on the course today…no 70’s round, but an 82…last year I was happy to break 90, so thanks for your site and teachings!!!

Anyway, I was watching the tube last night where the talk was all technology teaching, with modern bio-mechanic tools. The talk was how the pros shift the front hip forward 5″, then turn thru the shot…..hmmmmmmm….I feel your system eliminates the need for the “hip bump” by the nature of the set up (weight forward) then turn thru the shot. Had an “AHA!!!” Moment after thinking your video thru, hit it crisp, straight, and in the short grass.

Also used your putting technique for the first time. Had good results and will continue forward with it. Kind of a cool moment, played thru a foresome after they hit on a par 3, I was about 30 feet out, up and down roll with about 3 foot left to right break…drained it thru the side door. Heard 1 of the gents say “what a putt!”. Only big putt made, but ony 1 three putt today. Gotta spend some time on the practise green. You other members, give this a try.

Does keeping the inside of the upper front arm touching the chest help with this?

Thought I would chime in here. I have been using the Ross method for around two years and my HC has dropped from 24 to 15 1/2 . I recently got fitted for custom clubs since I now have a repeatable swing. They measured me, put me on a monitor and a lie board. My new clubs are really awesome but I think would have been pointless without the reliable repeatable swing. The club fitter even commented how easy it was to help me because the swings were so similar he could really see the differences the equipment made on the monitor. They helped improve my accuracy but no where near as dramatically as working on the Ross method has done. If you feel like the swing is there then the fitting can help as well IMO. As always thanks to Ross.
